Jamie Higgins

Head Dog Trainer and Behaviorist

My name is Jamie Lee Higgins, my pronouns are she/her and I’m the head trainer at IGY6!

I’ve been an animal lover since the day I was born. I often joke around and say the first language I understood was dog, due to being raised with my family’s German Shepherd Jake, who taught me the ways of the wolf which I carry with me to this day.

My love for animals blossomed around the time I was 2 years old, after a parakeet found me in my backyard of Dorchester, beginning my journey with the many saved and fostered furry friends I’ve made to this day.

In 2010 I nursed a stray kitten back to health, bottle feeding her for almost 8 weeks every 3-6 hours until she was strong enough to start solids. I named her Chloe, and as our bond strengthened I couldn’t imagine giving her away. We spent 11 years together until she crossed the rainbow bridge.

In my early educational years I aspired to become a veterinarian, at the time I believed that was the only way I could save animals, and during my last year of high school I started an internship at the MSPCA as a vet-tech. But through this I learned I wasn’t a fan of the medical setting and decided it was time to take a new path, so in 2012 I began more hands-on work with animals at a boarding facility, learning from experienced trainers on how to create a trusting environment with even the most aggressive dogs.

The following year a litter came in from a killer shelter in Tennessee, 9 pups and their mother. I instantly fell in love with one of the puppies and made the decision to adopt him. Thor became my best friend, and where I went he followed. He was the den mother while I fostered other dogs, cats, even birds. Thor succumbed to cancer in the fall of 2022, survived by our last foster together, a spunky grey kitten named Rose.

Growing up in a family of military men and knowing the struggles that veterans face, I am beyond thankful to be a part of IGY6. Saving an animal, and uniting them with a life long friend is something I strive to do with every foster I’ve met through the years.

Why Volunteers Matter

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organization. Your dedication and support make a world of difference, not only for the therapy dogs we rescue and train but also for the veterans who find solace and healing through their companionship. Here are some key areas where you can lend a helping hand:

Volunteer

Social Media

In the digital age, social media is a powerful tool for spreading awareness and connecting with our community. If you have a knack for online communication, your expertise in managing our social media platforms can make a tremendous impact.

Dog Care and Transportation

Our furry friends need care and attention as they go through their training and rehabilitation. Volunteers who can help with grooming, feeding, exercise, and transportation contribute significantly to our dogs’ well-being.

Event Planning

Organizing events and fundraisers is a vital part of our mission. If you have a talent for event planning, your creative ideas and logistical skills can help us host events that raise awareness and support for our cause.

Community Engagement

Engaging with the community is essential to our success. Volunteers who can represent IGY6 – Two Lives at Once at local events, workshops, and outreach programs help us connect with veterans and individuals who can benefit from our therapy dogs.

How to Get Involved

Becoming a volunteer with IGY6 – Two Lives at Once is a straightforward process. Simply reach out to our team, express your interest, and let us know which area of volunteering you’d like to contribute to. We’ll provide you with all the necessary information and guidance to get started.

Together, we can make a significant impact on “Two Lives at Once” – the lives of our therapy dogs and the veterans they serve. Join our cause, and let’s make the world a better place, one act of kindness at a time.
